Global Roots - Singing with Seth |
Come sing thrilling roots music from American traditions and around the world. We’ll sing songs that sparkle with lovely harmonies, groove with great rhythms, and capture the soul. You don’t need to know how to read music – written music will be provided, but Seth will teach all the parts. Repertoire may include African, Balkan, Appalachian, shape-note, and gospel music. |
Shape-note Singing |
Learn and sing favorite shape-note songs from The Sacred Harp and Northern Harmony songbooks. Shape-note music is raw and energetic, exhilarating and haunting, and accessible to all singers. You don’t need to know how to read music – Seth will teach all the parts. For new shape-note singers, this class will be a great introduction to a vibrant tradition. For seasoned folks, it’s a chance to sing some old favorites, learn some new songs, and sing them all with pizzazz and vigor! |
Contradance Piano - Funk and Groove |
Seth will take you from where you are, from the basics of boom-chuck contradance piano to chromatic passing chords à la Quebec, walking bass lines, color chords, and Seth’s unique funk-inflected style. A participatory workshop for all levels. |
DADGAD Guitar |
| Seth will take you from where you are, starting with basic open chord voicings and strumming patterns and moving through color chords, walking bass lines, swing voicings in DADGAD, sounding Old-time in DADGAD, and more complex strumming and damping patterns. A participatory workshop for all levels. |
Swing Rhythm Guitar |
| Swing chord voicings, progressions, and how to achieve that rhythmic sound. A basic knowledge of guitar chords is required. |
