What is contra-dance? What is contra-dance music?

On weekends, Seth often hops on an airplane or just drives down the road to play piano and guitar for contra dances. Contra-dancing is a community-based social dance form with roots in New England. It's easy to learn and lots of fun. With moves such as swing, ladies' chain, hey for four, and allemande left arranged in 32-bar phrases, you dance with someone new every thirty seconds. All dances are taught by a dance "caller."

The music brings together fiddle tune traditions from New England, Quebecois, southern Old-time, Scottish and Irish traditions, as well as contemporary tunes, with driving grooves for a powerful live dancing experience. Seth's bands incorporate elements of swing, blues, cajun, and funk for a rich emotional range and dynamic dance ecstacy!
